A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
