EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
