The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
