Authorities reported they were alerted by a individual who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.

An important political figure stated the vandalism made him without words and had to be addressed quickly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
