Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
